Founded in 2001, The Clinic was the dream of two women, Dr. Lorna B. Stuart and the Reverend Marie Z. Swayze. Dr. Stuart and Mother Marie wanted to create a medical center that would provide primary medical care services to people who do not have medical insurance. The Clinic is located in the former rectory of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Phoenixville. Dr. Stuart and Mother Marie raised approximately $500,000 to restore the abandoned rectory, and in exchange, St. Peter's leases the building to The Clinic for $1.00 per year.
The demand for health services for the uninsured and underinsured is increasing dramatically. The populations we serve are people who truly fall through the cracks of human and social services. They do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid, and often their income is just over the requirement based upon 150% or 200% of the federal poverty level guidelines. Since our doors opened in October of 2002, Dr. Stuart and our volunteer physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals have treated more than 51,000 patients who have no medical insurance or who are underinsured. Volunteers and staff of The Clinic regularly participate in outreach programs where members of the community are updated on the organization's activities.
Because of the daily work of our medical director and the caring dedication of our staff and volunteers, The Clinic has been the recipient of many community and professional awards recognizing the value of our service to the community. In 2007 we were the proud recipient of a GlaxoSmithKline Impact Award for our work with uninsured patients. This award is given annually to a small number of Philadelphia area organizations in recognition for their impact in community healthcare. In 2006, our medical director received a Huggins Heroes award through Channel 10 for her visionary work in creating and maintaining The Clinic. She was also named a CNN "Medical Marvel" Hero in 2008, and The Clinic was featured on a CNN special. Two of our doctors were named in Main Line Today’s “Top 100 Physicians” issue in 2007.
The Clinic is well-respected throughout the community, not only for the quality of care we provide, but for the dignity with which we offer care to our patients.
